FROM GRAPE TO GLASS

HOW MUMM NAPA IS ADDRESSING SUSTAINABILTY & RESPONSIBILITY

At Mumm Napa, we’re passionate about addressing all aspects of sustainability from grape to glass. We also know sustainability is a journey of continual improvement & we take pride in our current efforts while looking forward to further progress.

Our group Sustainability & Responsibility: 2030 Roadmap covers our four pillars of focus: Nurturing Terroir, Valuing People, Circular Making and Responsible Hosting. Here’s how we’re working towards each of these goals on an ongoing basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

During the winemaking process, we consider our impact on Nurturing Terroir (nature and land) and carbon emissions (energy), focusing on sustainable vineyard management, biodiversity, soil health, energy, waste, water, and more. The Mumm Napa winery is certified Napa Green and ISO 14001:2015, demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship and continual improvement.

PROTECTING & RESTORING HABITATS

Our Devaux Ranch vineyard is certified California Sustainable Winegrowing – a local, independent, third-party certification focused on winegrowing practices that preserve natural resources, protect local wildlife, help sustain grower communities, and commit us to continuous improvement.  Devaux Ranch is also Fish Friendly Farming certified, helping to protect and restore habitat and improve water quality. At Devaux Ranch, we’ve stopped tilling and maintain a permanent ground cover to protect soil quality. We encourage natural predation of vineyard pests by building owl boxes, raptor perches, blue bird boxes, and bat boxes. In addition, we use natural pheromones to control vine pests such as mealybugs. Pollinator gardens provide habitats for beneficial species and encourage biodiversity. We also use targeted irrigation, monitored via soil probes, to ensure efficient use of water when irrigating.

MINIMIZING IMPACT

As we work towards minimizing our carbon and water footprints at the winery, we have initiated projects to reduce our energy use by driving efficiencies, including the replacement of boilers at our winery in 2021 and improvement of our onsite wastewater treatment. We recently upgraded our bottle cleaner, moving away from rinsing with water to using compressed air.

Sustainability is a journey of continual improvement; we take pride in our current efforts and look forward to further progress.
